The Arts Council of Greater Grand
Rapids was formed in 1967 as an independent nonprofit
corporation. The Council was a volunteer-managed
institution consisting of representatives of arts
and civic organizations until 1975 when the first
staff was hired. It began an annual united arts
drive in 1970, which evolved in the 90s to become
the value-based grant process of today. Through
a highly competitive application and panel review
process, about 20 Grand Rapids arts organizations
share between $80,000 and $100,000 annually in
operating support grants. |

In 1986, 30 women, with a shared vision, took
a stand for the betterment of Michigan's women
and girls. This group of trailblazers was driven
by a mutual sense of commitment to support programs
that meet the special needs of women and girls
that would otherwise not be funded. |

The National Endowment for the Arts is a public
agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the
arts, both new and established; bringing the arts
to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts
education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an
independent agency of the federal government, the
Endowment is the nation's largest annual funder
of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states,
including rural areas, inner cities, and military
bases. |
