Office Manager

I’m excited to join the GCA team! I bring several years of experience supporting teams through organization, communication, and coordination. My background in HR has given me a strong foundation in managing schedules, handling confidential information, and keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes. I also enjoy mentoring and coaching others—helping people grow in their roles has always been a meaningful part of my work.

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and History, and I’m also a certified coach through the Coach Training Alliance.

Outside of the office, I love to cook, work on my ever-growing garden project, and taking long hikes with my dog.

Director of Development

& Communications

As the Director of Development and Communications at Girls Choral Academy, I’m passionate about sharing the stories that celebrate the power of music and the confidence it inspires in young girls. With over seven years of experience in marketing and communications, I love finding creative ways to connect people to our mission—whether through heartfelt storytelling, beautiful design, or meaningful community partnerships.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Communications from Grand Valley State University, where I focused on storytelling, design, and marketing. That blend of creativity and strategy helps me approach my work with both artistry and purpose—whether I’m developing a campaign, designing materials, or highlighting the incredible accomplishments of our singers.

Music and storytelling have always been central in my life. Outside of work, I stay involved in local theater and arts organizations around Grand Rapids like Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and School of Theatre Arts and Circle Theatre, where I continue to explore how performance and creativity bring people together. I’m grateful to use those same passions here at Girls Choral Academy to help our singers’ voices be heard, both on and off the stage.

John Conway

Accompanist

I began playing the piano in my early teens, spending 20 minutes a day on the prescribed lesson material and another 2 hours in Elton John and Billy Joel songbooks!

I spent several years playing in more than a few bands and decided to give musical theater a try and found myself in the pit with so many incredible musicians. This enterprising spirit garnered many amazing travel experiences while playing for shows and saw many great places such as Western Europe, the Baltics, the Far East, NYC and Alaska.

My proudest moments include playing first keyboard for San Jose's production of Children of Eden and the world premiere of future Tony winning musical, "Memphis" at North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, MA. Less proud moments include playing for west coast department stores in the men's suits and furnishings foyer.

I'm love playing for GCA and watching these amazing little girls grow, and grow, and grow!

Melissa Janes

Choral Director

I’m a music educator with a Bachelor of Music Education from Westminster College. My teaching journey began in Virginia public schools, where I led choirs and built inclusive, expressive music classrooms rooted in student agency and musical literacy. More recently, I’ve found deep joy in parent/child music instruction, designing developmentally rich experiences that nurture connection, curiosity, and early musical foundations. Across all ages, I’m driven by a desire to enrich students’ musical lives through thoughtfully sequenced music literacy. I want every learner to leave my classroom with the tools and confidence to become a music maker for life, whether that means singing in a choir, singing in the car, or simply listening with intention and joy.

Whether I’m conducting a choir rehearsal or empowering families to make their lives more musical, I bring a love of musical play and a commitment to fostering belonging through music.
